Types of Pimples and Acne: How to Tell What You're Actually Dealing With Β· Mamash Editorial
Not all acne is the same. The single biggest mistake in skincare routines is treating every pimple with the same product, the same intensity, the same urgency. Here is a clearer guide.
Comedonal acne β the surface kind
Whiteheads and blackheads. Caused by clogged pores, dead skin and oil buildup. Usually small, painless, persistent. They love the T-zone. Best calmed by gentle exfoliation and barrier support β not aggressive picking or scrubbing.
Inflammatory acne β the red kind
Red papules and pustules. The skin is reacting to bacteria getting trapped under the surface. Treat with anti-inflammatory ingredients β Centella, Niacinamide, Tea Tree at safe doses. Avoid drying spot treatments that make inflammation worse.
Cystic / hormonal acne β the deep kind
Deep, painful, slow-healing bumps under the skin. Usually around the chin, jawline and lower face. Almost always hormonal. Cannot be squeezed out β and trying will only scar. These need internal patience and external support.
Your acne is a language. Stop yelling at it. Start listening.
A simple rule
If it can be exfoliated away in a week β it was comedonal. If it goes red and then disappears β it was inflammatory. If it stays for weeks, hurts, and comes back at the same time of your cycle β it is hormonal. Each needs a different ritual. None need war.
